The Allegheny River Trail in the Strip District of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania is part of a larger multi-modal trail system collectively referred to as the 3 Rivers Heritage Trails.  The portion of the trail between 11th Street and 21st Street had been built in discontinuous segments throughout the 1990s and early 2000s and all were in need of repair.  Overgrown landscape wrought with invasive species, cracked concrete, patchy asphalt, vandalism, and deteriorating structural retaining walls plagued the corridor.

Pittsburgh, PA

A grant was received by the landowner in 2016 which permitted trail repair and improvements to proceed.  Trail improvements attempted to repair the immediately noticeable deficiencies, replacing invasive plant species with natives, repairing concrete, and mill and overlay of asphalt.  Belgian block pavers, installed with great care by the folks from Zattola Construction, are found not only along this stretch of the trail, but also throughout the entire trail system, and speak to the local vernacular and create a visually unified trail experience.
